Artist, Director of Photography, IATSE Local 600 Camera Operator
Jules Hotz is a multi-disciplinary artist living in California. Because variety makes for a rich compost in which to grow ideas, they work as a visual artist, photographer, illustrator, audio storyteller, and filmmaker. Their wide range of creative experiences, from completing international artist residencies to working as an award winning photojournalist, continues to inform the creative discipline they are most known for, film. Hotz is most known as a commercial and documentary Director of Photography and an IATSE Local 600 Camera Operator.
Whether camera operating on HBO's Emmy award winning Hacks, or climbing a steep mountainside as a Director of Photography for a micro budget documentary, Hotz loves being at the intersection of story, visual composition, and physical movement.
Leaning into curiosity, wandering through new environments, and paying attention to changes in light, coluor, and form, fuels their work, and also their favourite downtime activities––painting, long distance hiking, and gardening.
