Co-Founder, Nice Monster

Steven Spencer is a multi-Royal Television Society Award-winning and Olivier Award-winning director, writer and co-founder of Nice Monster, a stop-motion and mixed-media animation studio based in Thailand. His work blends emotional storytelling with handcrafted filmmaking, miniature sets, puppetry, CGI and emerging technologies.

In 2016, Steven directed the Disney and LEGO special Frozen: Northern Lights, which debuted on Disney+ for the holiday season. He later focused on building Nice Monster into a studio known for cinematic craft, environmental storytelling and distinctive brand films. Its environmental work for the UN and Greenpeace drew the attention of Coca-Cola, leading to the studio’s first major stop-motion production.

Steven has since become a key figure in developing stop-motion filmmaking in Thailand, helping nurture a new generation of artists in a field that previously had little local infrastructure. He has directed more than ten films for Hong Kong Disneyland’s Duffy and Friends franchise, combining character-led storytelling with richly detailed handmade worlds.

Nice Monster is currently in production on what will be Thailand’s first stop-motion animated feature film, further establishing the studio’s role in shaping the country’s animation landscape.
