Imraan Christian is a visual artist and activist whose practice draws on indigenous knowledge systems, mysticism, and South African socio-political history. His work engages themes of lineage, migration, and ancestral memory. Christian gained international visibility through his documentation of the 2015/2016 South African student protests and later served as a Brand Ambassador for South Africa, representing freedom of expression. He lives and works in Cape Town.
Christian works across photography, filmmaking, painting, and public art. His practice is informed by concepts of genetic memory, decolonial thought, and mythologies rooted in Southern African cultures. He describes his process as one of maintaining clarity to access inherited histories and personal ancestry.
He has collaborated with organisations including Nike, MTV, and UNICEF, and his work has been presented in public installations in Munich, Berlin and Cairo, as well as major art fairs.
